Dr. Nigel Plummer, PhD
The Integrative Effect of Probiotics on Whole Body Health
Sponsored by Atrium Innovations
In recent years, there has been an explosion of probiotic options on the market. Shelf-stable formulations, unique ingredient combinations, and condition-oriented claims – how is a practitioner to choose?
In his CHNC2024 talk Dr. Nigel Plummer, PhD., will review new and cutting-edge research and address common misconceptions that clinicians make when prescribing probiotics. Dr. Plummer will argue that selecting products containing the exact probiotic strains highlighted in research studies will provide the best clinical results.
Key Highlights – Dr. Plummer will:
• Differentiate between probiotic species vs strains and illustrate the clinical relevance
• Highlight the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains with the broadest range of clinical outcomes
• Discuss evidence for the use of specific probiotics in aspects of health traditionally considered beyond the scope of probiotic intervention
Nigel Plummer, Ph.D., earned his doctorate in microbial physiology from the University of Surrey in the U.K., and began his career at Pfizer working on the development and manufacture of antibiotics. This commitment to R&D has continued in the academic sphere, as his research group has published more than 100 original scientific papers in the areas of the human microbiome, probiotics, and omega-3 fatty acids. In addition, they have published 22 full human RCTs on the impact of probiotics on many aspects of human physiology and pathology, and this investment in R&D continues to break new ground.

The Relationship Between Nutrition and the Autoimmune Cascade
The development and continuance of modern-day, conventional agriculture marked a volatile shift from traditional to westernized dietary patterns that bombarded society with no shortage of inflammatory exposures to the gut! Consequently, the types and prevalence of autoimmune disorders, due to disrupted gut microbiomes, environmental exposures and other key players, have been steadily ON THE RISE. The relationship that exists between the nature/sourcing of our daily nutritional fuel and the functioning of the Immune System (largely housed in the gut), is intricate and intertwined. Given the gut processes a HUGE volume of food intake throughout our lifetime and the gut cells represent the first line of defense against pathogens that have entered the body, it’s time to explore the big picture of autoimmunity:
• The pre-cursors
• Where human influence/empowerment lies in shaping the nutritional/symptom trajectory
• The types/sourcing of food-based nutrients that either continue to disrupt gut function, or soothe and repair it back to a thriving state of health.
A CSNN grad, Culinary Nutrition Expert & AIP Certified Coach®, Jessica is the founder of Jessica Pecush Nutrition – private culinary/holistic nutritional consulting based in Calgary. Jessica supports high-achieving women to REPAIR their gut, REGAIN energy and RELEASE life-hindering autoimmune gut disorder symptoms, so they can flourish in their personal/professional lives. This occurs inside The DI-JESS-TION Method – her nutrition/lifestyle coaching experience incorporating DNA stool testing. Jessica’s passion for this niche stems from her 2-decade journey with IBD (Ulcerative Colitis).
Ancestral Food Guide: The 4 Essential Kingdoms of Human Nutrition for Health & Sustainability
This CHNC2024 talk is not about telling you what to eat, when to eat or how to eat. What you WILL pick up is a very powerful guide that you can use to be sure you are consuming the foods you need, not only for your own personal health, but for planetary health as well. The ancestral food guide encompasses four foundational food groups that have been the pillars of human nutrition throughout time. Consider them the original four food groups, ones that are in line with human’s evolutionary biology and design. They transcend all diets, fads and trends and are a broad base from which you can make your own personalized dietary decisions. These are the basics that your ancestors and grandparents knew about but you were never taught. Foods you are actually designed to eat.
Malcolm Saunders mission is to help you find, and learn how to craft your own food and medicine. He is the Owner & Creative Visionary of the Light Cellar, on the faculty at Wild Rose College of Natural Healing and the author of two books about Elixir Crafting and Chocolate Alchemy.
A Magic Wand for Behaviour Change
As professionals in nutrition, we can all attest to the truth that good nutritional information (or even a scary prognosis) does not always equal behaviour change. In this short talk, Greg will bring a light and fun energy to the science of behaviour change. You’ll come away feeling compassion for non-compliant clients, and empowered with some tangible tools to leverage the powerful unconscious mind in service of the outcomes your clients want and deserve.
Greg founded LifeCraft from a belief that the meaning, fulfillment and abundance of a life in purposeful service is our birthright, and available to us all. And so in everything LifeCraft does, we are either supporting people to clarity on soul purpose, freedom from self-limitations to express it fully, or both.

Lucy Sharratt, Canadian Biotechnology Action Network (CBAN)
Will Genetic Engineering Nourish Us?
Until now, genetically engineered (genetically modified or GM) foods have mostly appeared as processed food ingredients. Soon, new techniques of gene editing will mean many new GM fruits and vegetables in our grocery stores and restaurants. Health Canada will not assess many of these gene-edited foods for safety and they could be released onto the market without any government approval process or notification to the government or public. In this presentation Lucy Sharratt will discuss what it could mean if GM foods begin increasing in our food system, and how this could effect our health and the health of our planet?
Lucy Sharratt works in Halifax as the Coordinator of the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network, also known as CBAN. CBAN brings together 15 groups to research, monitor and raise awareness about issues relating to genetic engineering in food and farming. CBAN members include farmer associations, environmental and social justice organizations, and regional coalitions of grassroots groups. Lucy previously worked as a campaigner and researcher on this issue at the Sierra Club of Canada and the Polaris Institute in Ottawa. Lucy also coordinated the International Ban Terminator Campaign which secured a strengthened global moratorium on genetically engineered sterile seed technology.
Daniel Lander, ND
Nutritional Aspects of Cancer
Cancer is now the leading cause of death in Canada but 40% of cancers are considered preventable. Diet and nutrition play an important role in cancer prevention and support both during and after cancer treatments, yet there is still a lot of confusion as to what is the best nutritional approach.
During this presentation, we will review the available evidence and discuss how to use diet and nutrition to help support people to:
* Reduce the risk of developing a cancer
* Help manage common adverse effects of cancer treatments
* Optimize treatment outcomes and reduce the risk of cancer recurrence after treatment
As a Fellow of the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology (FABNO), Daniel Lander is a Naturopathic Doctor with board certification in naturopathic oncology. He is a graduate of the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM) and also holds a Bachelor of Science, Honours degree in Nutritional and Neutraceutical Sciences from the University of Guelph.
