Cardiovascular events are the number one cause of death for women in North America and are often minimized in terms of both prevention and therapeutics by health care practitioners, despite its prevalence. There are significant differences between the presentation and development of cardiovascular disease affecting men and women, making it essential to understand these differences so as to develop an optimal program specifically to address the unique aspects of the cardiovascular system of women. This presentation will detail the fundamental differences between male and female cardiovascular systems and the reasons such differences have evolved. The discussion will encompass the wide array of systems interrelating with the cardiovascular system, including the gastrointestinal system, the neurological systems – covering the central, enteric, and autonomic systems, the immune system, the musculoskeletal system, the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, the circadian rhythm, and the endocrine system. Once a clear understanding of the cardiovascular system and its relationship with other organ systems has been established, a comprehensive integrative program will be presented to encompass both prevention and therapeutic approaches to cardiovascular well-being. Included in the program will be all aspects of lifestyle medicine and the use of evidence-based, targeted therapeutic nutraceuticals.
