Asia: Ginger

Ginger originated in the lush tropical jungles of Southern Asia and has been used for over 5,000 years for its many health properties as well as its flavour.

This tuberous root, characterized by a sharp, pungent flavour, has been used in many forms, including raw, cooked, dried and powdered, and even as a tea. Long known to help with gastrointestinal issues, many people drink ginger tea to manage nausea while some consume the powder as a supplement to combat heartburn.

Did you know that you can also use ginger as a natural air freshener? All you need to do is simmer about 60 ml (1/4 cup) of sliced fresh ginger with a whole sliced lime in a small pot of water and let the aromas waft. Ginger’s antiseptic properties can help to neutralize odours in the air and leave your space smelling fresh. Simmer for as long as you like, but make sure to refill the water to avoid it evaporating away.
