Being mindful at work – A natural guide to workplace wellness (part 5)

The everyday demands of a working life can make you feel like you’re running on an ever-accelerating treadmill. Months fly by and leave you wondering where all that time went. It’s important to step back and be aware of your surroundings.

Mindfulness occurs when we focus our awareness on the present moment. It involves a calm acknowledgement and acceptance of our feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations.  Practicing mindfulness can be a great way to avoid feeling overwhelmed by the daily grind, increase your awareness while decreasing stress levels, and empower you to bring your best, most creative self to your job.

So how can we achieve this during a chaotic work day?

Choose a few specific activities during the day to be done mindfully. Eat your lunch away from your desk, and pay attention jump-628431_640to what you’re eating and how much. Take an herbal tea break to relax your mind. Go for a short walk outside for some fresh air. Set an alarm on your computer or phone that reminds you to take three deep breaths a few times throughout the day.

Mindfulness can also be just as relaxing in a group. Join a yoga class to unwind your body and ease your mind, or set up a running date with your friends for collective meditation.

Think about it: life doesn’t always go as planned, and the work day is no different. Hard deadlines and last-minute meetings can get in the way and take time away from your daily exercises. If you’re short for time, try starting and ending each work day by identifying three things you are grateful for — it’ll only take you a few moments.

Studies show that practicing mindfulness regularly can reduce stress [1], lower blood pressure, and improve memory [2]. If we can find 10 minutes out of our busy day to be mindful, the overall health benefits will make the time investment well worth it.

Health is wealth

We spend a large amount of time at work — about 50 per cent of our waking hours, to be more precise. This makes managing deadlines and duties both at work and at home a balancing act. But at the end of the day, health is wealth.

We encourage you to make your health work for you. Take a step back and evaluate your daily routine to discover what changes you can make to your supplement regime that will boost your productivity. Whether it’s exercising at your desk, packing healthy and nutritious lunches, or practicing mindfulness to get the most out of your work day, there are many ways to improve your workplace wellness.
